MUSIC THERAPY
A creative approach that integrates elements of psychotherapy, expressive art and our innate musical nature that is person-centred, fluid, and strength-based.
What is Music Therapy?
The foundation of Music Therapy is built on the understanding that we are all inherently musical beings, meaning we have an innate sense of rhythm and musicality in the way we speak, move, and coordinate. For most of us, music is present in our everyday activities and is a common practice to soothe, ground, motivate, and energize our mind and body. This practice focuses on how we can use music methodically and structurally to cater to individual needs.
We will deep dive into your relationship with music in your past and how we can reconstruct this relationship to aid your healing. This can include processes such as psychoanalytical and relational work, learning CBT skills, creative writing, and music-making to express and/or self-regulate.
How?
I bring together an array of approaches to prompt innate natural creativity to come through intuitively. Each session can look vastly different, as well as each individual’s process.
Creative work is meant to challenge us, to break us out of our comfort zone. We will do so through the safe and structured container that is MUSIC.
While we tap into your well of creative power, we’ll gain awareness of what is showing up through your subconscious expression. We’ll develop skills and awareness that supports us in navigating our emotional landscape.
Some examples of approaches I use:
Original songwriting
Rewriting known songs
Singing/learning known songs
Song-based discussion
Vocal improvisational work (solo/duet)
Grounding vocal-based practices for anxiety management
Solo/duet musical improvisations
Personal playlist curation
Creative writing
Intuitive movement
Mindfulness practices
Verbal counselling
Mindset coaching
Process
General
Intention Setting
We’ll look into any ‘stuck’ areas in your life, or anything in particular you are needing support in either breaking down or building up.
Create Personalized List
We’ll create a list that consists of approaches you’re interested in, and ones that will challenge you. Having a list of options gives us flexibility to choose what would be most beneficial to you based on your needs and capacity on the day of session.
Evaluate, Reflect
We’ll continue reflecting on the intentions we’ve set at the beginning as we move forward. We’ll evaluate the approaches we chose collaboratively to see if any adjustment is needed to better support your journey.
In Session
Check-In
This is where you can share any insights or perspective shift that happened in-between sessions.
Exploration
We’ll explore our inner selves, and experiment through music and play.
Debrief
At the end of each session we’ll debrief and share how the experience was for you, any insights that arose during session.
